YOUR DIGITAL STRATEGY 1

For a long time, ministries have simply adopted their vision or mission statement as their digital purpose. And while the essence of the statement is very applicable to a ministry’s digital behavior, each element of the mission and vision statement needs to be digitally understood and a strategy decided upon to see those elements implemented.

Your strategy needs to capture the essence of your ministry but clearly articulate how that vision and mission will be translated into a digital presence that creates the momentum behind your movement.

General Strategy and Engagement Principles: Romans 12:1-2

Beloved friends, what should be our proper response to God’s marvelous mercies? I encourage you to surrender yourselves to God to be his sacred, living sacrifices. And live in holiness, experiencing all that delights his heart. For this becomes your genuine expression of worship.

Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes. (TPT)

Surrendering the desires of your heart (mission and vision) to God and then continually seeking the Holy Spirit for each post and response, your movement will be set aside (holy) and your ministries message will start to be seen as creating the momentum in your audience that they so desperately need. When that becomes genuine (Romans 12:9) and people can see the positive effect your movement is having on helping them and others change their minds, then they become your biggest advocates and start impacting others towards movement change.

When we start taking our strategy not just our vision to the Lord and His Word, we begin to discover His will and strategy. And as that begins to be implemented (empowered) it becomes beautiful, satisfying and perfect.

Romans 12:2 sets us up as to why we need to have a strategy. It clearly outlines that if we don’t decide on how we are going to do this and think differently about how we have approached it then we will default to adopting the ways of the world.

So many ministries tend to think that simply creating a Facebook page and a website with little to no “thinking”, is going to land their message and movement and create change in the audience that they have been called to minister to. Your digital presence is the biggest voice you have, it needs a pastor to lead it and not a volunteer youth worker (with all respect to volunteer youth workers – I will quantify this statement in section 3: Engage).

Other ministries think that pressing on as normal is the better option and whole audiences are left behind. The conversation is being had whether you participate or not. The more ministries that actively participate in the conversation the less the world will have a voice. You can no longer put you head in the proverbial sand when it comes to your ministry’s digital presence. Church bulletins and message hand- outs, typed letters and CD’s are dying or are already dead. They have become the exception and are no longer the norm. If you walk your vision and mission through a digital strategy with the intent of creating the resultant movement, you will speak to a much larger audience and reach many more people. But each social media platform has to have a purpose, an app has to be aligned to your vision and your website has a role to play and not just be a catch all dumping ground for your ministries vision.

Streaming tools and chat rooms, real-time online counseling and pastoring tools now exist as the new mount for our sermons and messages. We need to understand how to create a relevant digital strategy from our vision and mission statements if we are to participate in the biggest and most relevant conversation of all time – saving the world (Matthew 24:14).

What needs to be included in the digital strategy and how you can move your mission and vision in to the digital world will be discussed in the next two sections…
