It’s something I think about often.
I’ve never introduced a camera, a Facebook post, or an Instagram reel to Jesus.
I’ve only ever introduced people.
And many of the people we’re trying to reach today aren’t just unchurched—they’re pre-Christian.
They don’t know the Bible. They don’t know church culture. They don’t know what words like salvation, repentance, grace, or born again mean. We’ve spent years learning what many call “Christianese,” but to someone who has never met Jesus, it’s a completely foreign language.
Sometimes I wonder if those of us who have followed Jesus for years remember what it was like before we knew Him. Before we knew the verses. Before we knew the theology. Before we knew the language. We simply knew something inside us was searching.
So where does someone begin?
I don’t think they begin with learning Christian terminology.
I think they begin with Jesus.
The goal isn’t simply to teach someone about Christianity.
The goal is to introduce them to Jesus Christ.
The first step of discipleship isn’t mastering Christian language.
It’s meeting Christ.
That’s why I often encourage people to read one of Jesus’ teachings and ask one honest question:
“What if this is true?”
Not because one teaching saves you, but because every teaching of Jesus reveals Jesus.
Jesus never intended His teachings to become mere quotations. He intended them to become an encounter with Him.
We have to help people who know nothing about Him find somewhere to begin. His words are often the very first encounter people have with Him.
Jesus’ teachings are unlike any other teachings ever spoken. They are not merely wise sayings, good advice, or inspirational life verses. They are the words of the Word made flesh. They carry the authority, the character, and the invitation of the One who spoke them.
Receive even one of His teachings for what it truly is—the voice of the Son of God—and you’ll quickly discover that His words are all connected. One truth opens your heart to another. One glimpse of His wisdom reveals more of His glory. One teaching leads to another until you begin to see not just what He taught, but who He is.
Before long, you aren’t simply admiring a Teacher.
You’re encountering the Savior.
Jesus didn’t come merely to give us a better way to live.
He came to give us life.
His teachings continually lead us to that invitation—to repent, believe, and trust in Him as Savior and Lord.
So if you’ve never read the words of Jesus for yourself, start there.
Don’t read them as ancient wisdom.
Read them as the words of the One who claimed to be God in the flesh.
Ask one honest prayer:
“Jesus, if this is really You, show me who You are.”
I believe He will answer that prayer.
Just start with Jesus.
P.S. The internet seems to reward outrage.
Jesus seemed to prefer conversations.
No outrage. No arguments. Just Jesus.
