Pathway

Pathway

You are to walk in every pathway that the LORD your God commanded you, so that life may go well for you, and so that you will prolong your days in the land that you will possess.’

Deuteronomy 5:33

With so many bible reading plans, devotionals, books, and discipleship tools out there I often wonder what tools I should be using to “walk in every pathway that the Lord” has commanded for me.

Because Deuteronomy links pathway to command, I get a sense that the pathway is in fact a set of steps (disciplines) we take to walk out God’s commands. In the Old Testament, God’s commands were law, the steps taken were regimented and exact. But in the New Testament, God added grace (Jesus) to the law and when you mix God’s direct commands with grace, you get promises and principles. Just as binding but full of hope and not judgement.

The word commanded in this scripture does not scare me. I trust that any command that comes from God is perfectly balanced in love, justice, wisdom, and power. So I want to know what the pathways are that have been commanded for me because if they have been decreed in a state of divine balance, then they will bring balance to my life.

I know that I do not have to be looking at the OT law for these commands, even though we automatically think of the OT when we say the word command. Even though the law (OT) is still part of God’s Word, Jesus has fulfilled the jots and tittles of the law and gave us a whole new perspective to the commands and pathways from the Lord (promises and principles). I am no longer obedient to laws alone, I am now obedient to the promises God has given me.

I also know that the pathways I need to take are going to take discipline and focus. I know that these pathways will change as the situation of life fluctuates. Currently, I am seeking any information on the pathway (discipline) of releasing adult children into the world. It’s a whole new situation for me and so I need to study learn and be guided into new pathways if I wish to deliver a well balanced adult from my home. Now if the Word is beneificial in all things (2 Tim 3:16-17) then the pathway I need to take to bring about the best balance in this new phase of my parenting WILL be found in scripture. But it’s not very clear. Not as clear as the pathway to a good marriage or the pathway to giving etc.

And so I need to find other believers that have perhaps walked through this, listen to their advice, check it against the promises and principles of scripture and set my step in the direction the Holy Spirit leads me. It may take some disciplines to get there, but I am motivated by the promises of God (hope) not His wrath (judement).

Father I commit to being constantly aware of the pathways you are guiding me to. I wish to see the balance you bring to every situation in my life. Thank you for commanding me to walk in pathways that bring the greatest blessing – Amen
